Since its opening in 2017, Ayala Malls Vertis North has solidified its positioning as a pet-friendly establishment. With Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return (TNVR) operations underway and a pet-friendly policy in place, Vertis North has become a go-to destination for many pet parents and their companion animals, whether for leisure or entertainment purposes. Over the years, the mall has hosted several pet events and activities in partnership with animal welfare organizations. All these combined, Vertis North has successfully carved a niche market comprised of highly engaged pet owners, animal welfare advocates, and partner animal shelters.

While pet ownership is a growing trend in the country, so too are the myriad problems rooted in irresponsible pet ownership.

In the Philippines, there are growing concerns on animal abandonment, cruelty, and neglect. This is particularly alarming since 64% of Filipino households own a pet, the highest rate in Southeast Asia (Social Weather Stations, 2023). In 2019, according to the Philippine Animal Welfare Society, there were approximately 12 million stray animals in the country. The harsh reality is most of these stray animals were once owned pets, now abandoned and left to fend for themselves in the streets. The Quezon City Veterinary Department estimates that their local pound captures around 200 strays weekly. With most government pounds operating on very tight budgets, unclaimed animals are eventually euthanized within two week’s time to avoid overpopulation.

There is a clear need for community-driven programs to address systemic problems like pet abandonment and overpopulation. As a pet-friendly business, Vertis North has a social obligation to be part of the solution.
