SCAD SERVE: Sustainable Change Through Education

SCAD prepares talented students for creative professions through engaged teaching and learning in a positively oriented university environment. For more than 45 years, SCAD has championed environmental stewardship and sustainability education through transformative initiatives — from SCAD Back40's organic farm that produces tons of sustainably grown produce, to coastal cleanup efforts protecting Georgia's waterways, to tree planting campaigns addressing environmental inequity in underserved neighborhoods. These sustainability-focused initiatives are envisioned and led by SCAD President Paula Wallace and SCAD SERVE, a university initiative that brings together the SCAD community to implement environmental education, advocate for sustainable practices, and create meaningful solutions that foster a more sustainable future.

SCAD SERVE empowers SCAD students, faculty, and staff to drive environmental change through intentional sustainability initiatives that improve quality of life for our communities. In the university's hometowns of Atlanta and Savannah, SCAD SERVE focuses on four critical areas of environmental impact: sustainable food systems, green building practices, responsible consumption, and environmental justice. SCAD SERVE harnesses the expertise of more than 700 professors and the entire SCAD learning community — spanning 100+ degree programs — to educate, advocate, and implement sustainable solutions.

Recent SCAD SERVE projects include sustainable urban agriculture programs, renewable energy installations, waste reduction campaigns, and environmental justice advocacy — all fostering the next generation of sustainability leaders.
