BALCO, established in 1965 as India’s first Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) in the aluminium sector, has played a pivotal role in the nation’s industrial growth. In 2001, the Government of India divested 51% equity to Sterlite Industries (India) Limited (now Vedanta Limited), while the remaining 49% remains with the government. Today, BALCO stands as a benchmark in aluminium production, leveraging advanced technology and a commitment to sustainable growth.
Operating from Korba, Chhattisgarh, BALCO has a smelter capacity of 345 KTPA, utilizing Prebake Technology based on the Soderberg Process. A 1740 MW captive power generation facility supports both operations and the state’s energy needs. BALCO has been a pioneer in the aluminium industry, being the first to establish an integrated aluminium production facility, the first to introduce a captive power plant, and the first to adopt +300 kA Prebake pots.
Finishing lines produce high-quality Ingots, Wire Rods, Busbars, and Rolled products. Alumina is sourced from the refinery at Lanjigarh and imports, ensuring a balanced supply chain. BALCO also pioneered the widest Hot Rolling Mill, reinforcing its industry leadership.
