TerraCycle is the most innovative waste management company in the world. We develop ways to collect and recycle hard-to-recycle waste streams that are not generally accepted by traditional municipal recycling services, including cigarette butts, toys, mascara wands, and much more. What makes something municipally recyclable depends on whether your local recycling company can make a profit recycling it. If the cost of collecting and processing the waste is lower than the value of the resulting raw material, it will likely be locally recyclable. If the cost is higher, then it likely won’t be. TerraCycle can recycle the hard-to-recycle because we work with brands, retailers, and other stakeholders who fund the recycling process. Our free recycling programs are sponsored by brands so you can recycle their products and packaging for free. It’s a way for them to take voluntary responsibility over this important externality of waste.

As a company that operates internationally, across 21 countries, it’s important for us to promote our award-winning solutions to a global audience.
Innovation is at the core of TerraCycle’s success. From our early days (more on that here) to where we are today – an international recycling company – we’ve succeeded because we continue to innovate recycling solutions for hard-to-recycle trash. For example, we have a team of in-house scientists who make up our research and development team. They analyze materials and determine how to recycle them by creating processes for breaking down trash and recycling those materials for use in new applications. This team has developed several groundbreaking recycling processes for TerraCycle, like the process to recycle discarded cigarette butts.

We are very excited about the growing excitement around reuse. Our global reuse platform, Loop, saw major growth in France and Japan in 2024. Products from brands like Coca-Cola, Nutella, and Evian can now be found in reusable packaging in more than 250 stores across retailers in France. In Japan, Loop products can be found in over 110 stores across retailers Aeon, Askul, and StyleTable. Our success in France and Japan has shown us that, in order for reuse systems to be more readily accessible, they need the support of legislation, subsidies, and retailers who make reuse a priority.
